- Machine Tier List -

This page contains a tier list for the two categories this game has to offer for advanced Time Attack.

"Slider Settings" is the most popular category and is widely dependent on how well the machine can utilize sliding. It's also mandatory to almost always go with max (or near max) acceleration settings when competing in this category.

"Jumper Settings" is similar to how you would be recommended to play this game casually. In the Jumper category the machine depends more on strong boost and low weight. The Jumper category is restricted to setting the settings bar within the red-colored interval, as displayed below:

I believe the machine order in the tier lists below is mostly agreed upon by top-10 F-ZERO X players. Regardless, I'd like to give a short explanation of how the in-game stats work, and how its importance comes into determining its potential for Time Attack.

Body:
The body of the machine determines the amount of energy a machine has got. That's all it does. Body does not have impact on any other performance. This was confirmed by TAS'er who goes by the name "Lord Tom". He also figured out exactly how much more energy is increased with each body rating. Starting off with a body rating of E gives the machine a total energy of 142 points. Each increase in rating from there increases the max energy by 12 points, like so:

E = 142 HP
D = 154 HP
C = 166 HP
B = 178 HP
A = 190 HP

Knowing this gives us a pretty good idea about how much influence the body rating of a machine got in a tier list.
It's also worth mentioning that boosting requires the same amount of percentage of the energy meter, regardless of the body rating. Higher body rating is only going to help out with enduring wall collisions and rail slides. This means the body rating has very little use in the Jumper category.

Boost:
The booster determines the acceleration/deceleration rate of the machine booster. It turns out that boost plates actually have the same strength as a C-graded booster, so in other words, boost plates do not correlate to the booster of the machine.

It's also worth noting that the booster literally has no influence on neither the speed or acceleration/deceleration rate when the speed is above 2000 km/h.

Grip:
Grip determines the control of the machine. Having a strong grip will make it harder for the machine to start going into slide state, as well as reducing the sliding performance. It also reduces the cornering ability (in DT-state). For Time Attack (with Slider settings), this means that it's always better to use a machine with a low grip rating, because reduced cornering ability is a disadvantage.

With Jumper settings it depends. It's usually better to go with less grip, although the difference isn't nearly as significant as it is with Slider settings, due to the fact that sliding cannot be done in this category.

By the way, something that many aren't aware of is that it's possible to recover grip somewhat from tapping the engine (useful for machines with low grip rating). I'm not certain on exactly how this works in detail, but we'll leave that kind of testing to Mr. JAGG_ZERO, lol.

Weight:
Low weight is almost always considered to be better, and that's because of the better DT-cornering, acceleration and air performance that is improved with less weight. The minor advantages of having greater weight, like slightly lower deceleration rate, higher unboosted top speed, and extended slides doesn't justify for its disadvantages. The occasions where slightly higher weight is an advantage usually has to do with low average speed caused by the track layout.

When grading a machine, the importance of each stat goes from best-to-worst in the following order:

Slider Settings:
Low Grip > Boost > Low Weight > Body

Jumper Settings:
Boost > Low Weight >> Low Grip > Body

- UPDATE -

I stand corrected and have changed the text above accordingly. Mistakes fixed:

*Boost plates do not correlate with the boost rating.
*It's not "always" better with less grip in the Jumper category.
*Weight has no impact on the speed when traveling through slopes/loops.
